Design
Chassis The Aspire E1 - 472G - 6844 has black molded plastic providing a stable base and a layer of shiny white plastic lid and palmrest . If you look closely , the white plastic is actually printed with lace - like a series of dots , but it's mild enough that even from a few feet away it just looks white . Despite the material , the construction is very tough , none of flexing often seen in entry - level systems . Measuring 1 by 13.5 by 9.6 inches ( HWD ) , the laptop is slim enough to tuck into a backpack or carry under your arm , but at 4.6 pounds , it is nowhere near as portable as thin - and - light Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite , which is only 0.7 - inch thick and weighs 3.5 pounds .
The 14 - inch display offers basic 1366 -by- 768 resolution , and while it has a good quality color when viewed head - on , the viewing angle is not great , with colors - just seeing some shifting degrees off center . The quality of the audio , on the other hand , is better than expected , with crisp , clear sound . In my tests , the volume is relatively low , even at the loudest setting , but it is better than many other in this price range .
The chiclet - style keyboard with black plastic key , with no backlighting , but the textured surface of the buttons feel good, and the keyboard does have a decent typing feel and good key travel . The touchpad also feels great , thanks to a textured surface and includes touch button bar . What it does not do well , however , will offer support for Windows 8 gesture controls - no touch screen , the touchpad is the only way to offer the intuitive swiping and resizing offered to Windows 8 , but the sensor had a problem registering the swipes from the edge of the pad and two finger scrolling .
Features
The port selection is not bad , with VGA and HDMI for video output , three USB ports ( one USB 3.0 , two USB 2.0 ) , an SD card slot , and a LAN port for Gigabit Ethernet . For wireless networking , the system in 802.11n Wi - Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 .
The physical disk drives have all but lost both laptops and Ultrabooks , so no surprise that the Aspire E1 - 472G - 6844 has no optical drive , but it is outfitted with a 500GB , 5400rpm hard drive spinning . While it provides a fair amount of storage space , it is not the speediest option , and it does not compare well with the system offers drive solid - state ( SSDs ) or hybrid drive with flash memory . The Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch , for example , has the same 500GB - capacity hard drive , but adds a cache of 16GB flash memory to boost performance and speed up the boot time .
With the onset of the screen you will see the trial offer LiveSafe McAfee Security ( 30 days ) and Microsoft Office 365 ( 30 days ) , along with a raft of preinstalled applications . These range from useful apps like Evernote entertainment apps for movies and TV ( Hulu Plus , Netflix ) , music ( Spotify , Music Maker Jam ) , and reading ( Kindle , Zinio , NextIssue , NewsXpresso ) . There are icons linking directly to online stores ( eBay , Amazon ) , and some wild animals extras , such as Cha - Cha , iCookBook , and also Didlr . Acer also throws in some proprietary apps Explorer with Acer , Acer Portal , and Acer Docs . Covered Acer Aspire E1 - 472G - 6844 with one- year warranty on parts and labor .
