Samsung Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition

Samsung Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition

Samsung knows one or two things about making top-notch ultraportables and Ultrabooks, and the new Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition ($ 1,499.99 as tested) shows that it is one of the best in the category anyway. The follow-up to top-rated Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus, the new 2014 Edition Book 9 is the most feature that wowed us in the past, such a slim design, premium lightweight construction, and a battery that lasts throughout the day. The new model, however, loses the wonderful display so in Book 9 Plus, and while the improved battery life and larger display size I can to make up for it, it is not enough to take top honors.

The Samsung Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition marks a slight change in the naming convention for the previous iteration. Last year, the Book 9 is available in two configurations, the Premium Plus Book 9 and the lower-powered (but more expensive) Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite. With the new model, the "Plus" and "Lite" name was discarded, with only a single Book 9 configuration that keeps the majority (but not all) of the high-end offering Plus and this is a significant step up from the Lite, which makes it simpler Book 2014 Edition 9.

design
Measuring 0.5 by 12.6 by 8.80 inches (HWD) and weighs only 3.92 pounds, the new Book 9 is thin and light, but it is also very sturdy and durable thanks to an aluminum chassis and improved keyboard, providing a very solid feel to be quite portable ultrabook. It has the same sleek curves as the previous Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus, but with a slimmer overall profile and narrower bezels around the display. The result is a more lightweight laptop packs a larger 15.6-inch capacitive touch display with a similar overall size. That's larger display also account for the slightly higher price lists, which makes 9 2014 Edition Book $ 100 more expensive than the previous Book 9 Plus.

Even more significantly, they display the new Book 9 a step backwards from the amazing 3200-by-1, 800 resolution screen of the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus, or even the 2,560-by-1, 440 resolution of Choice Toshiba Touch Kirabook 13 i7s editors'. Instead, there is a 1,920-by-1, 080 screens, which are more common in midrange Ultrabooks. This display is brighter, with 300 nits backlight, but the display Full HD is not particularly compelling. One benefit of lower-resolution display, however, is the improved energy efficiency, extending the battery life through time.

The keyboard is subtly sculpted keycaps, a surprisingly deep 1.3mm key travel, and a soft-touch matte finish on the individual keys. Also offers backlighting for easy typing in low light conditions. The touchpad is very large, measuring 4.25 by 3.2 inches, with a silky smooth surface and full support for Windows 8 gestures.

Samsung uses a Wolfson digital-to-analog chip for better audio and recording, and Dolby partnered to develop custom compression algorithms to reduce the flattening experienced when listening to compressed audio. To my ears, the sound is good when heard through the built-in stereo speaker laptop, but the real magic happens when listening to high-end headphones; FLAC files when played back with better audio quality than CD.
