The Toshiba Portege Z30 - A1301 ( $ 1,279 direct ) is the latest in the long line of highly regarded business Ultrabooks Toshiba , distinguished by a strong yet lightweight magnesium chassis - alloy, and a plethora of features that squarely aimed at workers who need to get things wherever they are . The Portege Z30 - A1301 does not greatly exceed expectations for performance , but the combination of an abundant selection port and a battery that will carry you through a full day of work and then some makes it an excellent choice for many business users .

design
Design The Portege Z30 - A1301 is lightweight and strong thanks to a magnesium - alloy chassis with an internal honeycomb support structure for greater rigidity with less weight . Measuring 0.82 by 12.5 by 9.0 inches ( HWD ) , the slim and portable Z30 - A1301 weighs just 2.6 pounds - considerably lighter than either of the Editors ' Choice Dell Latitude E7440 Touch ( £ 3.85 ) or the Lenovo ThinkPad T440s (£ 3.5) . The Mag - alloy looks like Toshiba Kirabook , but slimmer , sleeker , and toned down with a darker finish .

The 13.3 - inch display has a 1,366 -by - 768 resolution , the same as you see on the Dell Latitude 6430u , but not as high resolution as the display on Lenovo T440s or the Dell E7440 Touch ( both offer 1920 - by- 1 , 080 resolution screen ) . It is also nowhere close to 2560 -by - 1 , 440 resolution with Toshiba offered similar but consumers dedicated Kirabook . While 1366 -by - 768 is common in many business systems anyway, the difference between this system and most anything consumer - oriented ultrabook is great . Unlike most current Ultrabooks , the Portege Z30 - A1301 does not offer touch capabilities. While this is not a problem when using Windows 7 - from which our evaluation model , it will have some impact on the ease of use if you opt for Windows 8 .

Two down - firing speakers provide the sound , and when we tried it with the new " Guardian of the Galaxy " trailer , the sound is the quiet side , which requires me to lean in to make out the dialogue . Sound is actually improved by improving the software DTS Sound Studio . After adjusting the settings DTS dashboard , the clarity is much better , although the volume is still a bit low .

The system sports the same chiclet - style keyboard to see the most Ultrabooks , but this one is both backlit and spill - resistant , making it better suited for use during a working lunch , or while you type up notes during a PowerPoint presentation with the lights dimmed . In the middle of the keyboard there is a little blue lobe , Accupoint pointing device by Toshiba . Above the touchpad , just below the spacebar , the two mouse buttons for use in Accupoint lobe . The touchpad itself offers the usual functions of multi - touch , the right and left buttons integrated into the clickable touch surface , with a small fingerprint reader set just below the touchpad for secure login .
