Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 's Touch ( 2014 ) ($ 1499, as tested ) updated this year with one of our favorite business Ultrabooks , the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch . Retains the lightweight, rugged construction of the previous model while shaving off another part of an inch , and the total package is still a great business laptop . Not all change is for the better , however , and while Lenovo has made some bold changes to keep the Carbon X1 Touch the leading edge of laptop technology , some of the fixes seem to be a step backwards rather than forward .
design
Like many high - end and business - class Ultrabooks , the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch uses premium materials to achieve a winning combination of rugged durability and thinness . In this case , use of carbon fiber , which is already embedded in the molded plastic frame and lid for lightweight strength and resilience . The updated design of the X1 Carbon is even slimmer than previous models , measuring just 0.73 by 03.13 by 8.94 inches ( HWD ) - astonishingly slim when you account for the fact that with the ability to interact - shows are , of necessity , much thicker than their non - touch counterparts . Weighs 3.15 lbs, it is lighter than both the previous iterations , the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch ( £ 3.25 ) , and the Editors ' Choice Lenovo ThinkPad x240 (£ 3.2) , but the Toshiba Portege Z30 - A1301 ( £ 2.6 ) is a half - pound lighter , thanks to another premium material , magnesium - alloy.
The 14 - inch display is a bit larger than you might expect to see on a laptop with the size , but Lenovo manages to fit more screen space into the design for super narrow bezels around the display panel . The touch panel - which supports 10 - point multi - touch and all the standard gesture controls for Windows 8 will be protected from scratching and cracking of an edge -to - edge sheet of Gorilla Glass . For a bit of extra functions , the X1 Carbon Touch has a 180 - degree hinge , which allows you to fold the display down flat . Our review unit came equipped with a high - resolution ( 2,560 -by - 1 , 440 ) panel offers good color quality and viewing angles . My only complaint with the display is that the glass is more reflective than I'd like, and it is a bit blemish - prone . In addition to high -quality display , the X1 Carbon Touch is outfitted with two 1 - watt stereo speakers , and enhanced with Dolby Home Theater sound processing .
The X1 Carbon Touch keyboard features AccuType Lenovo , which uses a standard chiclet design with scalloped , sculpted keycaps more comfortable than the average flat - topped keys . Layout has changed , however , with two divided keys - a pair of key sharing size and shape normally occupied by one - integration Delete and Backspace on the top right corner , and the Home and End keys completely replacing the Caps Lock key . The new layout will take some getting used to , but in general the changes seem fairly well thought out .
In the middle of the keyboard is the distinctive red TrackPoint Lenovo areas , including right and left thumb - friendly buttons just below the spacebar . Side of the keyboard is a fingerprint reader for biometric security simple . Has also been updated clickpad mouse , using the same style of clickpad see the Lenovo ThinkPad T440s and Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga . The new clickpad has more travel when pressed , resulting in a deeper clicks . I personally do not like it , but this is the kind of details that will vary from one person to the next , so try to get some hands - on time with it before purchasing .
Lenovo has taken the unexpected step of replacing the standard function keys ( F1 - F12 ) with a narrow - touch- sensitive display called Adaptive Function Row . Features embedded touch input a backlit liquid crystal display , protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass . Replacing its standard function keys in several dozen different functions - each with its own icon - from the common keys F1 - F12 on the tool Web browsing , controls media , and more . Dismissed the idea , and it does offer a more flexible selection of tools , but also makes it more complicated row function , which requires some extra hunting through different sets of tools to find what you 're after .
