Chromebooks have had a lot of success with the budget-minded consumers, but the biggest strides made by the Google-powered Chrome OS laptop in the classroom, with all schools to converted into the education system geared for students from elementary to high school. The CTL Chromebook J2 ($ 199 as tested) is another such system, and the manufacturer has done a lot in this space, as seen in CTL Educational Chromebook last year (NL6). J2 proud of Chromebook $ 169.00 on Amazon a new processor, all-day battery life, and seem to be tempered, even in adults. It stands pretty tall against low-cost competitors such as HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE) $ 299.00 at Best Buy and Samsung Chromebook Flip Choice Editors' (C100PA-DB02) $ 239.00 at Amazon, which earns it the top status thanks to stellar performance and a more efficient design. Educators may want to take special notice, however; Chromebook J2 sell at a more affordable $ 169 for educational institutions.
Design
The laptop measures 0.76 by 11.42 by 8 inches (HWD) and weighing £ 2.46, which is not far off from the size of the Acer Chromebook C720P-2600 $ 279.00 at Best Buy. The Chromebook J2 has a wonderful sophisticated look for a study focused on the model. Where to look past plastic-like systems, including the rounded corners of CTL Educational Chromebook (NL6) and chunky rubber bumpers, as Dell Chromebook 11 Touch $ 329.00 at Dell, the Chromebook J2 have slim build, a aluminum-covered palm rest, and a black-on-black color scheme accented with bare metal on the touchpad. If past-oriented education Chromebooks toys look like elementary school, the J2 looks like it just got its MBA.
The keyboard has a standard layout Chrome OS, with dedicated search button and Chrome-specific function keys instead of the usual F1 to F12 keys. The touchpad has a matte plastic surface, with clickable corners instead of physical buttons. The touchpad supports gesture controls Chrome, such as two-finger tapping and scrolling.
The 11.6-inch display is small, but not unusual for a Chromebook screen size, the average is between 10 and 12 inches and the resolution 1366-by-768 as usual. But while the resolution is standard, the limited viewing angles are not, with lots of color shift when viewed from any angle outside the dead center. This is useful for someone, but not really suitable for sharing with other classmates. Like most of the Chromebook, no touch functionality.
Features
On the right side of the system, you'll find a single USB 2.0 port, a microSD card slot and a headset jack. On the left is the power connector for charging the laptop, a second USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI-out port.
Inside, the J2 is outfitted with dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, with a 2x2 antenna configuration for better signal strength and throughput, along with Bluetooth 4.0. The J2 is fitted only with 16GB of onboard storage, but even some Chromebooks offer larger 32GB allotments, they have much in the way of local storage. Instead, Google expects users who rely on online storage services, such as Google Drive. Thus, the J2 also comes with 100GB of storage Google Drive, free for two years.
This kind of online connectivity and reliance on Web-based services that are common to the Chromebook. Chrome OS is a natural Web-focused operating system; instead of locally installed software, such as Microsoft Office or Photoshop, use Chromebook apps and extensions (many of them free), such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Presentation (equivalent to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint , respectively), or the image editor such as Pixlr, available through the Chrome webstore. A large number of these apps can be configured for offline functionality, so you high and dry when no Wi-Fi, and there are lots of apps specifically built for classroom learning, both for teachers and students. As an added bonus, CTL throws a year of filtering content securly, for parents and teachers can have some peace of mind around what students are viewing online.
CTL covers the Chromebook J2 with a one-year warranty, but there are two-and three-year warranties available (for $ 28 and $ 36, respectively), with additional Accident coverage ($ 100) and a package called the Three-Year Complete Care Suite ($ 145), which includes one of the primary replacements per year for three years, extended battery warranty coverage, and free two-way shipping for all repairs. There's also discount pricing for all warranty available for qualified education customers.
Performance
The J2 is one of the first Chromebooks we'll built around a Rockchip CPU (the other is the Samsung Chromebook Flip). Unlike most of the processors we've seen in previous Chromebooks, which range from cheap Intel Celeron and Intel Atom processors Core i3s-it is an ARM Cortex A17 processor made by a third party. Chromebooks Samsung originally used Xynos Samsung-made ARM processor, but the company has since shifted to Intel CPU as well, leaving the low-cost ARM processor-based largely absent in Chrome categories. Rockchip's cheap CPUs have just started showing up in low-cost, low-power devices, and it is one of the first of what could be many categories Chromebook, since it allows for sub- $ 200 pricing. Paired with only 2GB of RAM, a Rockchip RK3288 processor-C allows the J2 offering performance surprisingly agile for such a cheap device.
Boot time is a speedy 8 seconds, which is not as fast as, for example, the Core-i3-equipped Dell Chromebook 11 (Intel Core i3) $ 269.00 at Dell, boot 4 seconds, but it was in par with others in the category. More impressive is the quality of the user experience. Which many Chromebooks will slow down during multitasking, with low-power processors getting bogged down after the opening of the fourth or fifth tab, the J2 managed over 10 tabs in our tests, including streaming media ( and music videos by Vimeo and Pandora), without any noticeable slowing. It's something we've seen especially in more expensive systems, such as the Intel Core i3-equipped Dell Chromebook 11.
In our battery rundown test, the J2 take an impressive 8 hours 55 minutes. This puts them alongside the longest-lasting system of categories, such as Dell Chromebook 11 Touch Atom-equipped (9:15), but behind the Asus Chromebook Flip (11:15) and the category-leading Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) $ 1,251.52 on Amazon (12:00). It also leads the top performers, such as Acer Chromebook C720P-2600 (7:20) and the HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE) (5:31). That's enough to take you through an entire day of school, and still as the battery life for a small house.
