Toshiba CB35-B3340 Chromebook 2
This category sure Chromebook starts crowded these days, and Toshiba will return to the ring in the new and improved CB35-B3340 Chromebook 2 ($ 329.99). Despite having a 13-inch HD display, the Chrome OS laptop is sleeker and slimmer than its predecessor, the Toshiba CB35-A3120 Chromebook, and the integrated speaker upgrade as well, courtesy of Skullcandy. It is not enough to topple our Editors' Choice Chromebook, but the Toshiba Chromebook 2 is a solid competitor in a very competitive category.
design
The new Chromebook 2 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, which is pretty impressive, considering it not only retains the same 13.6-inch display, but also upgrade it to a full HD In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel. The plastic chassis measures just 0.76 by 12.76 by 8.4 inches (HWD) and weighing just 2.95 pounds, smaller and lighter than the Acer Chromebook 13 (CB5-311-T9B0), which measures 0.71 in by 12.9 by 9 inches (HWD) and weighing 31.3 pounds.
The 13.3-inch display with 1920-by-1080 resolution looks fantastic. This is not the first Chromebook with full HD panel, the Acer Chromebook 13 (CB5-311-T9B0) There is also a 1920-by-1080-pixel display, but it's amazing anyway. Colors are bright and airy, the screen holds fairly dark colors and grays, and viewing angles are good, although there are some minor changing color when viewed off-center. For those who want to save a few bucks and do not necessarily want or need full HD, there is a 1366-by-768 version available for $ 80 less. The laptop also has stereo speakers, dedicated by Skullcandy, making the first Chromebooks Chromebook 2 with a brand new sound system.
Our review unit also came with it a pair of Skullcandy headphones crusher, which is sold separately, but did give us a chance to test the sound, purportedly Along with optimizing for Skullcandy headphones. The sound quality from the speakers alone is pretty good, with a moderate volume and more bass than I expected from such a cheap laptop, but Toshiba is proud of Skullcandy headphones also get some extra in- optimized. I am a little iffy on that particular claim, since the integrated headphone built-in amplification, making it difficult to say what, if any, improvements are offered by Skullcandy sound.
The full-size keyboard is a major chiclet-style affair. It has a unique layout of Chrome, replacing key with a dedicated search button on Google's Caps Lock, and has a row of function keys Chrome instead of the usual F1-F12. The accompanying clickpad also very good, with decent monitoring and support for all kinds of motion Chrome, like two fingers tapping (rather than right-click) and scroll. The truth be told, I more often use the Chromebook, the more I find myself wishing for some of the same easy to use controls in Windows.
Features
You get an ample collection of ports. On the right is an HDMI-out port, a single USB 3.0 port, a headset jack, and a Kensington lock slot. On the left is a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot includes support for several formats of SD (SDHC, SDXC, etc.). Unlike many of the 11- and 12-inch Chromebook, this system has deeper card slot, allowing you to enter a card and leave it, for more local storage.
Internally, the system has 16GB of storage typical of most Chromebooks, as Google pushes clouds over the local storage. The Acer Chromebook C720P-2600 is an exception, with 32GB. Also offers the Chromebook 2 dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which is the fastest commercially available standards, we welcome this feature in a laptop so dependent on online services. There is also Bluetooth 4.0.
Google Chrome pre-installed on Chromebook 2, and it requires just logging in to your Google account in order to give you access to all your files in Google Drive, Chrome bookmarks, and the same tastes and history your usual browser Chrome. Google encourages cloud storage by offering you free 100GB of additional storage with Google Drive (good for 24 months) to purchase a laptop, and a 60-day trial of Google Play Music All Access. Covered Toshiba Chromebook with a 2-year warranty.
