The Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1 ($ 699 as tested) is the latest midrange ultraportable from Asus, and boy is it slim. Thin and light are the watchwords of the laptop industry for years now, but the Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1 takes it to new extremes. Unfortunately, the compromises made to get to its slim dimensions leave new system looking more amazing than competitors like Apple MacBook Air Choice 13-Inch editors' $ 859.00 on Amazon.
Design
Asus has always made a design focus of the Zenbook line, and the UX305FA-ASM1 is no exception. The slim chassis is etched with a pattern of concentric circles, and the end is near-black color Asus calls "obsidian stone." The slim, aluminum frame sizes 8.9 by 12.8 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs only 2.6 pounds. That is roughly the same size and weight of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro $ 1,149.00 in Lenovo, and it is lighter than the Dell XPS 13 Dell Touch $ 1,299.99 (£ 2.76) and even than the Apple MacBook Air (£ 2.91). We also invite comparison uber-svelte design with a prominent other products of Apple, the Apple MacBook 12-inch Zenbook UX305FA-the-ASM1 with a size of 0.5-inch thick compared to the 0.51-inch MacBook, but the MacBook is lighter by 0.6-pound. That's not much difference, but it is one of the reasons Apple will charge almost twice as much for what is an otherwise similar laptop.
The display looks great, with full HD (1920-by-1080) resolution and an In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel offers a wide viewing angle and excellent color. An anti-glare finish retained the reflection at a minimum, although the slightly dull blacks displayed on the screen. Most notably, the display does not touch capability, an omission that could limit the appeal to users who want to take advantage of the Windows 8.1 interface and motion-friendly touch controls.
Feel beautiful chiclet-style keyboard to type on-equivalent Asus Zenbooks past, at least, but no backlight, which would be a bit of pain if you need to type something when the light is decreased to in a PowerPoint presentation. The accompanying touchpad is relatively large, measuring 4.1 by 2.9 inches, with broad, clickable surface.
While Asus touts the inclusion of Bang and Olufsen ICEpower sound speaker and Asus, which is a winning combination in the past, the speaker of the Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1 is a little disappointing. Offering the bottom mounted speakers decent audio, but there are some buzzing and distortion at high volumes.
Features
Despite the slim dimensions of the chassis, Asus Zenbook outfits with full complement of ports and connectors. On the right is a USB 3.0 port with USB Charger +, a solution to sleep-and-charge faster offer charging for smartphones and tablets. Offering an HDMI Type D (Micro) video and audio output port, while supporting a headset headphone jack and a mic. On the left are two more USB 3.0 ports, plus an SD card reader. Laptop is also equipped with a dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connectivity.
For storage, there is a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD). That is twice the capacity of standard Apple MacBook Air 13-inch or 13-inch MacBook Pro (both usually have 128GB drive), but it is on par with the rest of the competition, such as the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro Dell XPS 13 and the Touch, which both have 256GB drives.
There is a fair amount of software pre-installed on the drive, so you may want to clean off some apps and programs from your new system. Some may want to keep, such as a free 30-day trial of Microsoft Office 365 or Twitter and apps for Netflix, but others, like the app from TripAdvisor, FreshPaint, Zinio Reader, iHeart Radio, and Flipboard, are safe to remove if you do not plan on using them. Asus includes a set of recommendations of the app, called Asus Giftbox, as well as a bit (16GB) cloud storage via ASUS WebStorage (free for three years).
Asus offers some extra security as well, with an embedded Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, LoJack and Intel Anti-Theft technology, and a built-in lock slot case physical securing the laptop. Asus Zenbook covers UX305FA with one-year warranty that includes the protection against accidental damage from drops, spills and electrical surges, which most do not include manufacturer warranty.
