In 2013, the first Microsoft Surface $ 299.95 on Amazon is seen as a response to Apple iPad Redmond $ 309.99 on Amazon, confirming that Windows can hold its own against the iPad and a flood of Android tablet. After Microsoft Surface Pro 3 $ 1,147.50 on Amazon was developed to prove that you can replace a full-featured Windows tablet laptop without missing a beat. Microsoft's newest tablet, the Surface 3 ($ 599, 128GB), is a good, more affordable follow-up to the Surface Pro 3, but in a market full of cheap Windows tablet-like editor 'Choice Toshiba Encore 2 Burn $ 399.99 on Amazon, are well-made tablet with a moderately affordable price is not enough to take the top prize.
Design
The Top 3 are familiar to anyone who has seen another Surface tablet, whether it's in person, or in kaleidoscopic new TV spots Microsoft. In fact, it looks like just the Surface Pro 3, but somewhat smaller, with the same magnesium-alloy construction and bare-metal finish. The 10.8-inch display is obviously smaller than the 12-inch Surface Pro 3, but it is actually a better size in some way. The Top 3 steps by 10.52 by 7.36 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.4 pounds, making it lighter and easier to carry in Pro counterpart, and placing it in the same weight class as Toshiba Encore 2 Write.
The built-in kickstand around back lets you prop it up on a table for the use of laptop-style, or even on your lap, even with the edge of the kickstand is still not comfortable when balanced with your knees. Unlike fully adjustable kickstand to 3 Pro, however, the Surface 3 opts for a three-position hinge easier to manufacture. The three positions offer a useful range of screen angle, but the lack of fine adjustments diminishes what is one of the best features of the Surface Pro 3.
The display is covered with edge-to-edge glass and proud 1920-by-1280 resolution, with full HD quality at a 3: 2 aspect ratio. The screen has a slightly less elongated shape than most of the tablet, with 16: 9 aspect ratio. Does the shape better for viewing web content in landscape orientation, and is far more comfortable to hold in portrait orientation. Touch capability is a given, but also supports the display of Surface Pen, with built-in digitizer provides excellent handwriting and drawing capabilities.
If you look closely, you'll see two slits on either side of the display, which meets the edge-to-edge glass magnesium chassis. This is a pair of front-facing speakers that offer better sound quality and volume than the side and rear-facing speaker you see on most Windows tablet. Dolby audio enhancements further improves audio output, and when I tried to speak with the trailer for Terminator: Genisys, the sound is pretty clear and I got the volume loud enough to fill the room. It was a refreshing change from the tablet with low volume, speaker distortion-prone.
Tablet is outfitted with a full-size USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, a micro USB charging port, and a headset jack. Hidden under the kickstand is a microSD card slot. All the ports are located on the right side of the system, although the top side you will see the physical buttons for power and volume controls. The bottom edge of the tablet is a magnetic docking connector for attaching a 3 Surface Type Cover.
A joke is the new micro USB charging port, not like the typical micro USB cable can be used to charge almost every other device, Microsoft includes a cable with a hard plug end of the 90-degree, which manages to be grown despite the use of one of the smallest available connectors. And it never seem seat secure when plugged in. It stings, especially from the first surface of the Pro and Pro 2 will trigger a hassle free magnetic connectors to charge.
You get two cameras, a front facing 3.5-megapixel webcam, and a rear-facing 8-megapixel camera for photos and video. The front camera is actually better than usual 1- and 2-megapixel camera along with the tablet and laptop, and it works well for applications such as Skype and Google Hangouts. The rear camera takes sharp, clear picture, with excellent color quality. Unlike previous iterations of the surface, the rear-facing camera with Top 3 not set at an angle. While it is useful for tablet-photographer-tourist, this means that when using the kickstand, the tablet and the camera is pointing in a downward-sloping angle.
For wireless connectivity, the tablet is equipped with a dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Moreover, the surface 3 has some tablet-specific sensor built in, with ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a magnetometer.
For storage, our review unit has a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD), although the $ 499 base model offers only 64GB, putting it on par with the Acer Aspire Switch 11 (SW5-171-325N) $ 449.99 on Amazon, which also has a 128GB SSD, but only half the capacity of premium pricing Surface Pro 3 (256GB SSD). By comparison, giving you the Toshiba Encore 2 Write 64GB, while the E-Fun Nextbook 10.1 $ 179.00 at Walmart has only 32GB of onboard storage. Microsoft also throws OneDrive 1TB of cloud storage (free for 12 months).
Besides $ 499 base model (with 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage above) and our $ 599 review unit (with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage), both of which have Wi-Fi only , there are two other configurations that Microsoft planned to offer, both of which will add LTE capability: a system with 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, and one with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage. Pricing for the two yet to be announced as of this writing.
The surface 3 with Windows 8.1, the full 64-bit, x86 version. This is a far cry from the recently retired RT operating system that offered the Microsoft Surface 2 (32GB), which seem to Win 8, but less than full support for Windows software. Throughout Windows 8.1, however, be able to run all your Windows software, and even upgrade to Windows 10 later this year. Microsoft offers the Top 3 with 12-month subscription to Office 365 Personal, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook. Additional apps include system app Drawboard PDF annotations, fresh paint, Flipboard, and the New York Times crossword. Covered Microsoft Surface with a 3-year warranty.
